When the cost of living surges, the public naturally searches for a culprit. We blame corporate greed, broken supply chains, geopolitical conflicts, or bad harvests. We meticulously track the rising price of everything from a gallon of gas to a starter home.
But we rarely measure the yardstick itself.
Throughout history, the greatest trick governments and monarchs have pulled is not simply creating more money to fund their debts, but doing so in the dark. The true danger of monetary expansion isn’t just the inflation it causes—it is the information asymmetry. By the time the average citizen realizes the currency in their pocket has been diluted, asset prices have already skyrocketed, and their purchasing power has been permanently transferred to the issuer.

The Slow Bleed of the Roman Denarius
In the first century AD, the Roman denarius was a coin of almost pure silver. It was a globally recognized store of value. But as the empire expanded, so did its expenses—massive armies, public works, and administrative overhead.
Successive emperors faced a math problem: they needed more money than they could collect in taxes. Their solution was stealth dilution. When taxes were collected, the mints would melt down the silver coins and mix in cheaper base metals like copper and bronze, issuing new coins with the same face value but less intrinsic worth.
Here is the critical mechanism of the deception: The public had no daily metric to assay the silver content of their wages. A baker or a blacksmith could not easily look at a newly minted coin and know it was only 80% silver instead of 95%. The dilution was invisible.
By the time Emperor Diocletian took power in 284 AD, the denarius was practically a bronze coin with a thin, deceptive wash of silver on the outside. But because the people couldn’t see the money supply expanding in real-time, they didn’t immediately demand higher prices. The lag between the debasement of the currency and the inevitable explosion in prices took years. When the inflation finally hit, it hit with devastating force, leading to price controls that ultimately paralyzed the Roman economy.
Henry VIII and “Old Coppernose”
We saw the exact same playbook during the Tudor period in England. To fund his wars and lavish lifestyle, Henry VIII initiated “The Great Debasement” in the 1540s.
Operating in absolute secrecy, the Crown began melting down silver currency and heavily adulterating it with copper. To the naked eye, the new coins looked identical to the old ones. The public went about their business, trading goods for what they believed was sound money.
They only realized the currency had been diluted when the thin layer of silver wore off the highest point of the coin—the King’s nose on his portrait—revealing the cheap copper underneath. Henry earned the nickname “Old Copper nose,” but the damage was done. The Crown had already spent the newly created money at its old purchasing power. By the time the merchants noticed the copper noses and raised their prices, the working class had already lost their savings.
The Cantillon Effect: Why the Delay Matters
The lag between money creation and price inflation isn’t an accident; it is an economic phenomenon known as the Cantillon Effect.
Named after 18th-century economist Richard Cantillon, the theory explains that newly created money does not enter the economy evenly. It enters at a specific point—usually the government or the financial sector—and then slowly ripples outward.
Because the general public does not know how much money is being created behind closed doors, the first receivers of the new money (the sovereign, the banks, the connected institutions) get to spend it before prices have adjusted upward. They use this fresh liquidity to buy up hard assets: land, real estate, and equities.
By the time the new money trickles down to the average worker in the form of higher wages, the prices of homes and assets have already surged out of reach. The public experiences the inflation as a mysterious increase in the cost of living, unaware that the currency was diluted months or even years prior.
The Core Mechanism
Richard Cantillon, an 18th-century banker, observed a fundamental truth: money is not neutral. When new money enters an economy, it doesn’t just raise all prices simultaneously. It enters at a specific point, giving a massive purchasing power advantage to whoever receives it first.
Today, central banks have replaced the gold mine. When the money supply expands (e.g., through Quantitative Easing), the new liquidity follows a strict hierarchy. Here is how that structural lag works:
Because the first and second receivers get the money before prices have adjusted upward, they naturally park that liquidity in hard assets and financial instruments, warping the markets in several predictable ways.
Equities: Artificial Multiple Expansion
For institutional funds and corporate treasuries, a massive injection of liquidity means the cost of capital plummets. When capital is artificially cheap, that money seeks an immediate home in the equity markets.
This drives valuation multiple expansion. Before a company even sells one additional product or improves its operating margins, its stock price gets bid up simply because there is a larger volume of currency chasing the same number of shares.
This dynamic disproportionately benefits asset-heavy, founder-controlled, or family-run businesses with high insider alignment. When liquidity floods the system, these companies can issue low-interest debt to aggressively buy back their own stock. If you parse the MD&A sections of 10-K and 10-Q filings during these periods, the capital allocation strategy is clear: utilize the new liquidity to shrink the float, artificially boost Earnings Per Share (EPS), and drive up the share price. The insiders win massive paper gains long before Main Street feels the inflationary effects.
Real Estate: Cap Rate Compression and the Hunt for Yield
In real estate, the Cantillon Effect manifests as an aggressive institutional hunt for yield. As central banks suppress interest rates to inject money, the yield on safe government bonds collapses. Institutional capital is forced further out on the risk curve, pouring directly into commercial developments and multi-unit residential properties.
This flood of early-stage money drives asset and land values up while compressing capitalization (cap) rates. It creates a detached macroeconomic environment where the cost of raw land and the physical asset skyrockets independently of the local economy’s ability to support equivalent rent increases.
The institutions borrowing at near-zero rates scoop up the properties first. By the time the expanded money supply trickles down to wage earners, they are entirely priced out of the housing market—ultimately forced to pay higher rents to the very entities that received the newly printed money first.
Precious Metals: The Ultimate Scorecard
The Cantillon Effect eventually exhausts itself once the newly created currency fully saturates the broader economy, triggering undeniable consumer price inflation.
This is the phase where hard monetary assets like physical gold and silver traditionally re-enter the spotlight. While equities and real estate benefit from the initial flow of cheap credit, precious metals act as the ultimate scorecard for the total stock of currency in circulation. As the delayed reality of the currency dilution becomes apparent, smart money often rotates out of overvalued, multiple-expanded equities and into hard metals—just as the general public is finally waking up to the invisible tax that has already been levied upon them.
The Digital Dilution
Today, governments no longer need to secretly melt down silver or clip the edges off gold coins. Money creation is done via keystrokes on central bank balance sheets.
While the data on money supply (like M2) is technically public, the deception remains intact through complexity. The average citizen is not reading central bank liquidity reports or parsing quantitative easing schedules. They are working, saving, and paying bills.
When central banks expand the money supply by trillions, that liquidity flows immediately into the financial system, triggering massive bull runs in equities and housing. The public, unaware of the sheer volume of new currency entering the system, watches in bewilderment as asset prices detach from economic reality.
It is only later—months or years down the line—when that diluted currency finally makes its way into the broader consumer economy, that the price of groceries, energy, and rent spikes. And just like in ancient Rome, the public is left wondering why their standard of living is evaporating, completely missing the fact that the monetary yardstick was quietly shortened while they weren’t looking.
